Tools for digital humanities
Archives are not short of material. They are short of ways in. BabelStacks builds software for working with texts, collections, and the structures that make them navigable.
We work on retrieval, indexing, and the unglamorous infrastructure that sits between a scanned page and a citable source.
Where things stand
We are early. Tools are in development and nothing is released yet. If your work overlaps with ours — or you have an archive that needs wrangling — we would like to hear from you.
The name
Borges imagined a library containing every book that could possibly be written. It holds all knowledge and is useless, because nothing in it can be found. The catalogue is in there too, along with every false catalogue.
That is the problem we care about. Digitisation has given us the library; it has not given us the catalogue.More about how we approach it →
